We're back from our "staycation" and let me tell you...it was much needed!
With Wes' job we don't get to spend a lot of quality time together these days...
...and this weekend was the best one I've had in far too long!
It was perfect and we laughed together so much.
Food for the heart, I tell ya!
So after checking in for our free night at the Sheraton in West Des Moines, we headed downtown to park for the game. We had an hour before the game so we walked to Court Ave to get some supper. My lovely husband was insistent that I choose the restaurant no matter how much I begged for his input, so we settled on Johnny's Hall of Fame.
Then we went to enjoy the game. It was a little warm Friday, but it was a 7pm game, so it soon became the perfect weather. The sun was mostly hidden by the clouds and it wasn't too packed so the body heat wasn't horrendous.
I think Baby Boy enjoyed his first baseball game!!
The next morning we went down for breakfast at the hotel and much to my dismay learned they charge for breakfast. What?! $11.99 a plate for buffet. Not top of the line buffet, just...scrambled egg substitute, sausage links that are way too greasy, and the same (tasty) danishes sold at any hotel (in every price range). I know I have stayed at a Sheraton before and eaten the same type of breakfast for no charge. It wasn't even tasty.
Afterwards we both felt kind of sick to our stomachs so I suggested some walking around. We initally wanted to go to the Farmer's Market and walk around downtown to see the art sculptures and such. As we checked out of the hotel, though, we quickly learned it was just going to be a dreary non-stop rain sort of day.
I kept telling myself we need the rain and it didn't matter.
We went to Jordan Creek Mall and walked around and guess what?!
We had an amazing time - so take that rain!! ;)
I think Baby Boy had a major growth spurt Friday night. When I woke up I didn't necessarily feel bigger but more firm. (FYI - that's Wes' Starbucks. If you know me...you know I am uninterested in anything that looks or smells like coffee in any way. Yuck!)
Then...dun dun dunnnnn...moment we've all been waiting for...
Ok, I'm a nerd. I had to take a picture of these hand dryers.
How cool are they?!
They are also the most hygenic (they said it right on em!!). You don't touch them at all.
Appetizer to share - fried cheese curds.
Ohhhhh yeah. Soooo tasty.
They were served with ranch and marinara.
By the taste of it the marinara was even homemade...it tasted distinctly like tomatoes, unlike most I've tasted in restaurants.
Wes' sandwich. It's a monster, I tell ya!!
The "bun" was fried mac & cheese...
...topped with a chicken breast, portobello mushroom, cheddar cheese, bacon, and mac & cheese.
I know, right?! Wow!!
My sandwich, equally delicious in my opinion...
big ole grilled portobello mushroom
on a very homemade tasting bun
topped with swiss and carmelized onions.
Be still, my heart.
It was AMAZING!!
This place is ridiculous, I tell ya!
We got there at 1pm and there was still a 30min wait...which still only got us 2 seats at the bar.
They text you when your table is ready.
The food is amazing and by the looks of it they didn't anticipate the amount of business
they would have when they bought/built the venue. The could easily double the size of the restaurant
and still have a wait.
When we left a little after 2pm there was still a 40min wait for people getting there.
So I definitely recommend anyone in the Des Moines area trying it out.
If you're not in Iowa, though, you still need to check out the menu on their website.
It's crazy. The shakes sound soooo amazing too...but there was no way either of us had room to test them out for ourselves Saturday.
I'm a little bummed. I wanted to...
...it just wasn't physically possible!!
On a side note, we're playing with the idea of becoming semi-vegetarian. Nothing crazy...we'll still eat meat from time to time at family gatherings and while we're out. We both just...don't enjoy it anymore (I think it's pregnancy related for me), so we figured we might as well try it.
Any recipe suggestions for us?
I like vegetables, but they have to be cooked.
Wes makes fun of me for that...but it's better than not at all, right?! :)

I was in Des Moines this weekend, too. I was there for the Women of Faith Conference. I also ate at Zombie Burger--so good! We went in the carry out side and had no wait. They had a little sitting area there, too.
I love those hand dryers too! and sounds/looks like you had a great staycation!
& yay for growth spurts from the baby! My doctor said my baby is supposed to grow a pound just this week and it's like YIKES! He isn't going to have much room anymore!
