When life gives you bananas...

As inevitable as it was that I'd start a blog, it was equally inevitable that it would revolve around food...like it or not, intentional or not.  With that said, one of my favorite blogs that I follow is Iowa Girl Eats (IGE).  She's not only an amazing inspiration and entertainment as far as her food, but just her blog in general is enjoyable.  One of her recent posts linked back to an older post regarding Banana "Ice Cream" which has no ice nor cream in it.  You must  check out this post - it is surprisingly intriguing to me.  The idea that one (frozen) banana can turn into a smooth bowl of custard...what?!  True story.

So, you guessed it...after work, I found me some bananas!!

Ok, confession: I was (a)too lazy to go to the store to get some and (b)knew if I went for bananas I'd leave $50 poorer (I hate how that works!!).  Solution: Grandma's house always has what you need, right?!  She happened to have these two lonely bananas laying around - so I took them!!

I peeled and cut them up, put them in a zip-lock, and popped 'em in the freezer.

After thoroughly frozen, I popped them in my blender.

It got a little creamy right away, but there were still lots of globs.  Honestly, there was even a little "smoke" coming from my blades.  They were not happy about this process.  I'm not sure if it was because ... well, I don't know.

Finished product.
It was a little too soupy for my liking, though, so I stuck it back in the freezer to make it resemble custard/ice cream more.

After an hour in the freezer...this is the finished product.

Grade: C
I didn't spit it out.  It was...banana.

Next time: Admittedly, I think part of my problem may have been in using a blender instead of a small food processor.  I improvised - I don't have a food processor; I have a blender.  Also, IGE added in frozen blueberries which I think I will try next time - or strawberries.  To try to save it, I added a tablespoon of peanut butter (what DOESN'T peanut butter make better...!??!) while eating...not Good Eats.  Perhaps if you added the peanut butter in during the blending process (I saw that as a suggestion somewhere when I was googling this in perplexity), then it would work better.

Overall experience: Glad I tried it!  It was interesting and has great potential...I just need to play with it a bit more and possibly purchase a food processor before my next attempt.

my thoughts - yay, I'm glad you tried it! I need to get out and get some, I think the kids will flip over it! Get a mini food chopper. Mine was maybe $30 and it. is. a-maz-ing! It's the same one that IGE uses in her blog (according to pictures!) I love it much more than my blender and think that it would make the difference!

I'm surprised that you just used banana - talk about being impatient! You jumped all over it :) Can't wait to try!

Yes, definitely impatient. I thought I had frozen strawberries, but was incorrect. :( I have a mini food processor, but it's a hand-crank one and I didn't think that would go over too well. Oh well. Let me know what you think when you try!

I also went home to try this. Except I'm a moron and put the bananas in unpeeled and obviously not sliced. Not sure if that will make a difference. I'll have to try this myself!
